Maintained status (previously referred to as implied status) allows individuals in Canada with temporary resident status to continue exercising the conditions of their existing permit while an application to extend the same type of status is being processed, provided the application was submitted before the current status expired.
Maintained status is not a new document, nor is it a substitute for a valid permit. It is a status protection that continues the conditions of the previous permit while the extension is under review.
Maintained status generally ends when the extension application is decided, or when the individual leaves Canada. Departing Canada while in maintained status can have significant consequences, including the loss of that status upon attempted re-entry.
Applications should be made well before the current status expires. If status has already been lost, restoration of status may, in certain circumstances, be an option within a defined period. Restoration is not guaranteed and depends on eligibility.
